Past Week at a Glance / We Are All Interesting

Being back in MDC for reservist has been fun but tiring. The choreography has helped me rediscover muscles which I've forgotten existed and left me feeling like 10 trucks had run over me. The inner masochist says it's "shiok". Haha.

Shooting has also started concurrently with reservist, and intensity should be building up quite soon, which also probably explains why flu bug has hit me - again. Briefly encountered it about 2 weeks ago, but it didn't really take its full course. Now that weekend's here, it reared its ugly head again. Thankfully, Mama (my grandma) is staying with us for a month or two while my mom recuperates, so everyone in the family is really pampered with her cooking and brewing of soups and tonic.

Ah... bliss :)

Smell of Rain is doing a final round of screenings at the Arts House, so do catch it if you missed the previous screenings!

The other day, we had acting class with Lim Yu Beng. One thing he said which really struck me was this: "We are all interesting." I found this strangely profound and liberating.

It all started when we had to think of an adverb and then act it out. Most of us chose really ordinary, day-to-day things, like walking, daydreaming, sleeping, reading. Mine was writing.

And so we were told to walk randomly around the room and find a spot and start acting out our chosen adverb. At his prompting, we would all stop whatever we were doing to look at a particular person doing his or her activity.

It was only after the entire exercise that he said, "We are all interesting." And it is true. Each time someone was doing his or her thing, ordinary as it seemed, we were riveted. I think this is something that takes age and experience to reveal to us.

Maybe it's an actor or filmmaker trait, perhaps, since people from these two trades tend to be (or are supposed to be) more sensitive and observant of their surroundings. Nonetheless, it's a skill that can be nurtured and developed on one's own. Many of us are so caught up with life in the fast lane that we've forgotten how to live - forgotten what it means to feel, forgotten what it means to slow down and just watch, forgotten what it means to be human.

We are all interesting. Every single one has a story to tell. Every single one is a sum of his or her experiences. And that is what makes us truly unique. And that is what we bring to the world.

Perhaps that is what brings meaning to life. And that is why every single person is able to make a difference.
