Rehearsals
Rehearsals for Smell of Rain has been really tiring and each time I come home, I just collapse on the bed and stay collapsed till the next morning. (Of course, after I shower and brush my teeth lah!)
Rehearsals are quite an experience. It's intense, mentally and emotionally draining, yet at the same time just damn good fun lah. It's intense, mentally and emotionally draining when you need to get in touch with the character. Like, creating a whole backstory that's not even in the script. Reason for this is so that at certain points in the script, when the character does something, you know or can rationalise a reason for it. Or even when it comes to 'blocking', which is the placement/movement between characters, little little stuff that they do, certain traits... all of these have to be clearly thought out. The way a character delivers a line. Would he say something like that? Would he say it this way, or some other way?
Getting in touch with emotions is not easy as well. For some people, they think of something personal in their lives and then transplant that emotion into the character in order to summon tears, for example. But I'm not comfortable with that since I feel that emotions that we personally experience shouldn't be cheapened - each time you tap upon a particular life experience in order to summon an emotion, that memory becomes more diluted, I feel.
There is another way to get in touch with emotions on screen, and that is to make the character so real that you can actually feel him, and experience whatever he experiences. It's a lot harder, but not impossible. And I think this would be a lot more enriching for myself as not just an actor, but also as a person. Gaining a new life experience in the shoes of someone (who could really exist in real life, not just on paper), as opposed to tapping upon old life experiences and diluting it in the process.
Rehearsals are damn good fun when we make G (the Director) laugh till she cries. Haha. Priceless. Can't wait to film some outtakes. Serious vs Spoof.
Anyway, here are some movie-related stuff...
Smell of Rain movie logo. It's pronounced "Yu3 Zi1 Wei4".
And this is Little Xiao Qi (Gynn) vs Big Xiao Qi (Yours truly). Haha.
That's about it for now.
There will be (I think) an official movie website coming up in the near future. Will inform you all about it. Also, would probably put up trailers for you all to download if I'm allowed to. Shouldn't be a problem coz' hey, it's free publicity, right? Haha. Trailers should be cut by say, around November.
Lots of exciting developments planned for the movie. Let's just hope everything goes well as planned, since the entire team is putting in lots of effort.

September 27th, 2005 at 10:06 pm Ah Super star, that explains why u have been so busy! U gotta take more chicken essence and more eye mo! Helps with the tearing, if not u can always use onions la.. ah yo no need to think of momma, papa or sad stories la... waste time.. go cut onions! haha

btw, the part about tapping into your emotions, that's just one school of thought. Another way is to act your way into feeling. i.e. do the action first which might then produce the emotion. It's a little difficult to explain.
I've got rehearsals too. 2 full days this week. =(
And out director wants us to dance. Me? Dance?
We've got about a month to go before the actual performance.
