Raining
It's raining now early in the morning. I actually do like the smell of rain.
But 晓齐(Xiao Qi) really hates it. Smells, much like music, can transport one back to a particular point in time. If one has happy memories, well and good.
If one has painful memories, the experience can be tormenting.
Music from say, the radio - you can switch it off.
In the case of smell, you can't. You do not have control over whether you want to re-visit the past, you simply just relive it in your mind's eye, triggered involuntarily by a merely a scent.
The wind is strong and cold outside, a pleasant respite from the searing Singapore heat. Something you'd appreciate if you were nice and snug at home, a spectator observing the forces of Nature being played out.
On the other hand, if rain brings you painful memories; if you were trawling the corridors of the HDP flat the entire night, a cold wind blowing raindrops on to your face and naked arms, no way to get back into your house. You feel rejected and shut off.
And you are only 7 years old.
You'd hate anything to do with rain. Even the smell of rain. Each time it rains, it forcefully rips open old wounds. Monsoon season in Singapore must be a such a torture!

September 20th, 2005 at 12:04 am I love the smell of rain... Somehow makes me feel relaxed and calm. When all my close friends went away it rained. Guess its their way of calming me down!
